Kerygmatic Retreats & Small Faith Communities

The goal of the  Kerygmatic Retreat is to provide every retreatant with the opportunity to have a personal encounter with Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit. It is a deep response to the call of the Good Shepherd and his representative, Pope Francis I.

What are some of the particular advantages of the Kerygmatic Retreat for St. Mary’s parishioners?

•  This process is oriented to fulfill the Church's call to bring about the New Evangelization in the heart of every believer---a living encounter with Jesus Christ.

•  For people familiar with Cursillo, Tech, and Christ Renews His Parish experience, this will be a next, deeper step.

•  It is a comprehensive Continuum of Faith so it helps in all parts of the faith journey of parishioners.

•  The leadership comes from fellow parishioners whose faith has come alive and these same people are the ones who evangelize others on the retreats.

•  After the retreat many people see the need to get involved in their parish's ministries. As their hearts are touched, they seek to serve God and make a contribution of time, talent and treasure.

•  This process takes seriously long term discipleship following the retreat with Small Faith Communities, and ongoing opportunities for faith formation, outreach and service to others who need to know the love of God.
The New Testament teaches that as Jesus launched his public ministry he entered the synagogue and read from the scroll of Isaiah the prophet. He identified himself as the one Isaiah predicted in Isa 61. The text is a programmatic statement of Jesus' ministry to preach or proclaim (Kerygma) good news to the poor and the blind and the captive.

The ancient Christian kerygma as summarized by Peter's speeches in the New Testament Book of Acts was:

  1. The Age of Fulfillment has dawned, the "latter days” foretold by the prophets.
  2. This has taken place through the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  3. By virtue of the resurrection, Jesus has been exalted at the right hand of God as Messianic head of the new Israel.
  4. The Holy Spirit in the church is the sign of Christ's present power and glory.
  5. The Messianic Age will reach its consummation in the return of Christ.
  6. An appeal is made for repentance with the offer of forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, and salvation.

Small faith communities allow their members the opportunity to enter more fully and deeply into the study of the Word of God and our faith. They are completely appropriate for and supportive of any parishioner regardless of past experience and study–including the curious to fallen-away to long-time faithful– willing to open and deepen the mystery of our communal call to love God and each other
Conversion
But study is not enough. The call to action is continuous and life-long and, well, active! We affirm the Truths of the Faith and change our lives to act more accordingly.
We proclaim our membership in the Body of Christ as witnesses of the Gospel among ourselves, in our homes, at our workplace, and in the secular world which so often rejects Jesus and his teachings.
Stewardship & Fellowship
Our talents and charisms are called forth to richen the common parish life with our own gifts of time, talent and treasure. Our ministries are applied and appreciated to further the work of the Kingdom.
We enjoy the support, encouragement and love of each other as Companions (those who share Bread) on the Way of the Lord.
